Commissioning - Engineering Advisor

As a Commissioning Engineering advisor in Denver, Co or Houston, TX, you will be responsible for leading and supporting the commissioning activities for utility-scale Wind, Solar and battery storage projects. You will be responsible for overseeing day-to-day commissioning activities with our EPC contractor while on site.

 

Every day, you will be responsible for all aspects of plant commissioning, including equipment and system inspection and checkout, overseeing daily commissioning activities, reviewing start-up schedules, and communicating with the Engineering team, Project Manager and senior management. You will provide engineering and technical support to projects to ensure that projects are completed within regulation and budget. You will assume direct ownership for all components and systems integrity and work with various departments to complete contractual requirements with the highest degree of safety and quality. You will work with the Project Manager and assist in assembling the turn over package for Operations.

 

  • Responsible to prepare ENGIE Commissioning philosophy, plan, schedule, standards, and procedures
  • Develop and refine methodologies, tools, and standards for an evolving commissioning practice to support ENGIE growth plan
  • Work with the Project Manager or their designee to jointly develop the punchlist prior to release of the system/equipment to Commissioning
  • Review engineering drawings and specifications to ensure adequate provisions have been made for precommissioning and commissioning functions
  • Review designs, equipment submittals, Operation & Maintenance manuals, start-up reports, checklists, and training programs for overall compliance with the Owner's requirements and commissioning plans 
  • Review test results and prepare test reports to confirm compliance with technical specifications
  • Provide initial commissioning plan, as well as coordinate precommissioning activities (including factory acceptance tests)
  • Serve as the lead interface between construction, commissioning, and operations, minimizing conflicts and maximizing cooperation during construction completion, commissioning, and performance testing phases
  • Execute Commissioning Procedures directing a Commissioning Team consisting of commissioning engineers, technicians, Operations personnel, other contractors, and vendor support personnel
  • Provide management and leadership to the start-up/testing and commissioning program from initial plan development, construction turnover, testing, start-up, commissioning, and turnover to operations for the defined project scope
  • Oversee the inspection process during commissioning to ensure work is delivered in a timely manner, meeting all customer expectations and specifications
  • Performs detailed system quality control inspections for completeness of installation vs. install manuals, engineering specifications and drawings and maintain detailed punchlist
  • Troubleshoot and Resolve site commissioning issues and concerns that the customer may arise
  • Monitor plant operations and provide guidance to Operations team as necessary
  • Report to the Project Manager on issues regarding commissioning, start-up schedule, and progress
  • Ensure that an organized documentation filing structure for all commissioning reports and documents is in place before starting testing and being maintained daily
  • Ensure that technical deviations are reported with a corresponding non-conformance report (NCR)
  • Direct or assist in developing Project Manpower Estimates and System Commissioning Schedules
  • Develop vendor call-out requirements and schedule for specialized vendor supplied equipment and overall vendor coordination
  • Prepare action plans to address gaps in the commissioning schedule/plan
  • Manage commissioning site visits, evaluation of new and existing sites…Ensure the highest level of environmental health and safety is incorporated in all electrical engineering and design aspects of ENGIE’s renewable energy generation projects

 

 

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in which you completed courses in electrical engineering, energy engineering, engineering technology or related field
  • A minimum of 7 years professional engineering experience
  • Clear understanding of OSHA safe workplace practices and procedures
  • Advanced Inverter commissioning, operation, communications, troubleshooting, manufacturer training and/or certification
  • Familiarity with medium voltage ac collection and High Voltage substation designs
  • Good knowledge of Medium Voltage Transformers and other Renewable Energy Balance of System (BOS)Advanced Construction, structural, electrical single-line and three-line drawings markups and red-lines, RFIs
  • Good knowledge of Utility and Interconnection (Substation and POI) Equipment
  • Electrical License and/or Equivalent education
  • Ability to read and interpret system and equipment plans, specifications, manuals
  • Familiarization with ERCOT and other ISOs New Generator Commissioning Requirements.

Compensation

Salary Range: $112,000 – $172,500 USD annually

What You Can Expect

As a Utility Plant Operator III (UPO III) at our University of Iowa location, you will be responsible for safely and efficiently operating power generation equipment that powers campus facilities, including the University Hospital. This equipment includes turbine generators, boilers, pumps, air compressors, conveying systems, fans, electric motors, ash conveying systems, control valves, and mobile equipment.

 

Each day begins with a handoff from the previous shift to understand the current operating status of the plant and tasks to be completed. The primary task of a UPO III involves the safe operation of the plant's turbines. You will conduct hourly rounds, monitoring pressures, checking for leaks or abnormalities, and starting and stopping turbines as needed. Additional responsibilities include monitoring pressure reducing valves, completing logs at the end of the shift, and performing weekly preventive maintenance (PM) during day shifts. We currently operate three steam generators and four natural gas-powered generators. Communication of pertinent information among shift members, production support personnel, maintenance, and management is facilitated through Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Maximo (our Computerized Maintenance Management System).

 

The UPO III may also provide relief and support in other job classifications, including Maintenance and Fuel Unloading. Other duties include performing regular testing and treatment of boiler water as directed and checking offsite equipment such as the Hospital boiler and West Campus boiler.

This position follows a rotating shift schedule, rotating between days and nights every two weeks. You will work seven scheduled days every fourteen days (Dupont rotating schedule), including nights, holidays, and weekends. Availability for vacation coverage, emergency relief, and overtime as required by the plant management team is essential.

 

What You’ll Bring

  • A High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required
  • Four (4) years of experience in which you gained expertise operating boilers, pumps, fans, conveyors, or similar equipment in an industrial, process plant, or ship or shore-based power plant setting
  • Two (2) years of experience operating solid fuel and/or gas/oil-fired water tube boilers, turbine generators, and related plant equipment

The Director of Interconnection will be responsible for managing the interconnection and grid integration process to support the company's overall development and operational goals across the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO). Focus will be on the Company’s existing ~10 GW pipeline of utility scale stand-alone energy storage projects in MISO, as well as new project analysis. You will be responsible for transmission-related topics including tariffs, planning, technical evaluation, contract negotiations and the overall interconnection process through the full life cycle of development and construction of projects.

 

Every day in this role you will be responsible for managing the interconnection process and monitor key milestones throughout the lifecycle of the project from early-stage development to commercial operation.

  

  • Coordinate, review and interpret interconnection and transmission studies performed by utilities and outside consultants
  • Function as main liaison with project developers, and third-party consultants, on matters relating to interconnection to provide technical insight and business solutions to reduce interconnection cost and remove obstacles to project development
  • Perform/manage analysis to predict interconnection capacity, deliverability, and other key parameters to support project development and have experience with load flow modeling and analyses
  • Conduct due-diligence review for potential interconnection and transmission risks related to potential projects, portfolio acquisitions, and commercial transactions; provide recommendations to the acquisition team
  • Perform transmission assessments and policy reviews to forecast future system conditions and determine commercial viability to support development and construction activities
  • Negotiation of contractual agreements with utilities
  • Collaborate with engineering team in optimizing project’s engineering design in support of grid integration requirements 
  • Represent the Company to establish and maintain productive relationships with key utility and MISO personnel, industry groups, regulators and other stakeholders on issues related to transmission and interconnection
  • Monitor regional transmission planning process and interconnection policy changes; participate as stakeholder in transmission and market-related regulatory activities as necessary with collaboration with the Company’s regulatory and development teams
  • Review utility transmission planning reports and present findings to the Company
  • Provide technical support for project development and acquisition activities in the evaluation of transmission system and planning issues

  • Drive decisions and prioritize allocation of resources based on a deep understanding of schedule dependencies and financial impacts
  • Maintain a rigorous understanding of the overall state of the energy storage market in CAISO, including regulatory and competitive matters, to inform development decisions
  • Track project progress through key development milestones, managing schedules and budgets, and coordinating across disciplines within the Company
  • Manage and/or support due diligence activities for acquisitions
  • Manage negotiation of lease/purchase options and agreements for site control
  • Coordinate engineering activities in pursuit of permits and as required for interconnection matters

  • Ability to manage a large workload across a large portfolio, while prioritizing tasks and effectively managing competing deadlines
  • Detailed understanding of the CAISO market or other ISO with particular focus on interconnection, regulatory and offtake matters
  • Ability to evaluate development status and efficiently inform critical decision making with management

As the Project Engineer Senior, you will manage the Engineering activities related to design for utility-scale renewables projects (wind, solar, and energy storage) throughout the US and Canada and serve as a main point of contact.

 

Every day, you provide engineering technical input into projects at various stages (from feasibility/ preliminary to detailed design), coordinate Engineering design efforts with EPC or external consultants to review and comment on design submittals in coordination with support from ENGIE subject matter experts (Civil and Electrical) and manage and ensure all deliverables meet Project specifications.   • Review/monitor contractors’ progress and monitor the progress relating to key project milestones
  • Internal coordination with Development, Engineering, Permitting, GIS and Land group
  • Assist procurement in running RFPs and managing the process to sub-contractors
  • Remain up to date on new technologies and regulatory conditions including utility requirements, vendor qualifications, industry best practices, safety standards, and relevant standards development
  • Travel to perform site assessments, design review meetings and due diligence of development engineering throughout the USA and Canada in support of site evaluation and development and permitting activities

Every day in this role you will be responsible for managing the interconnection process and monitor key milestones throughout the lifecycle of the project from early-stage development to commercial operation.

  

  • Coordinate, review and interpret interconnection and transmission studies performed by utilities and outside consultants
  • Function as main liaison with project developers, and third-party consultants, on matters relating to interconnection to provide technical insight and business solutions to reduce interconnection cost and remove obstacles to project development
  • Perform/manage analysis to predict interconnection capacity, deliverability, and other key parameters to support project development and have experience with load flow modeling and analyses
  • Conduct due-diligence review for potential interconnection and transmission risks related to potential projects, portfolio acquisitions, and commercial transactions; provide recommendations to the acquisition team
  • Perform transmission assessments and policy reviews to forecast future system conditions and determine commercial viability to support development and construction activities
  • Negotiation of contractual agreements with utilities
