ABOUT THE ROLE

 

 

We are seeking a highly skills and dynamic Energy Portfolio Manager to provide asset risk management services to internal clients across all time scales from the long term through to delivery. The Energy Portfolio Manager will be based in London,  this is a hybrid permanent role working full time Monday to Friday.

 

Key Accountabilities

 

  • Model renewable power generation, power storage and biomethane production assets in cooperation with quants & traders
  • Provide a realistic expected value of the future revenues of these assets (including their flexibility and constraints). Forecast revenue margins, running hours and production volumes 
  • Quantify the uncertainties around these metrics. 
  • Support assets and provide educated views on securing the value and reducing risks identified through asset representation, proposing a risk mandate and shaping decision making related to future hedging actions.
  • Active engagement with senior management of ENGIE’s internal Global Business Units (GBUs) “owning” the assets (eg FlexGen GBU covering flexible generation, Renewable GBU covering renewable generation and Networks GBU ).
  • Working in collaboration with internal market analysts, share markets’ updates when relevant with the GBUs.
  • Execute agreed hedging strategies on behalf of all assets, transacting with internal Trading teams.
  • Where appropriate, manage the physical fuel capacity and stock for the assets.
  • Assist assets in optimisation of flexible maintenance programs to ensure that the asset is more available during periods of system need, whenever possible.
  • Report financial performance of the assets in coordination with Finance and other operational teams.
  • Report on asset valuations and changes in value for the assets.
  • Conduct valuation and sensitivity studies on asset related products or initiatives (e.g. (dis)investments, flex increase, maintenance shifts, combining renewable with non-renewable assets)
  • Support regulatory teams in strengthening lobby arguments through analysis and expertise

 

KEY REQUIREMENT

 

  • Understanding of commodity market fundamentals, preferably power
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Digital mindset, motivated to simplify and automate processes and reporting
  • Strong communicator, with an ability to engage clients and colleagues effectively

We are seeking a dynamic and visionary Head of Data to lead our data strategy and operations within our energy supply business. As the Head of Data, you will play a critical role in transforming data into actionable insights, driving our business forward, and ensuring we remain a leader in the energy market. The Head of Data will be based in Leeds,  this is a permanent role working full time Monday to Friday working 2 days from the office. 

 

Key Accountabilities:

  • Develop and execute the Energy Supply UK’s data strategy in alignment with business objectives
  • Define and deliver the divisional Management Information strategy, creating the target state reports enabling business insight and improved controls
  • Lead the design and implementation of scalable data architecture and infrastructure
  • Establish and enforce data governance policies and procedures to ensure data integrity and compliance
  • Manage Data Engineering team responsible for data collection, storage, and processing
  • Manage Management Information team responsible for internal and external reporting 
  • Collaborate with business leaders to identify opportunities for leveraging data to solve business challenges.
  • Drive the adoption of data-driven decision-making across the organisation
  • Oversee data analytics projects and ensure quality and timely delivery
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends in data management and analytics
  • Create a data network across the data population in Energy Supply UK
  • Collaborate with the Head of IT and Head of Transformation to identify and execute data projects
  • Ensure compliance with data protection regulations (e.g., GDPR,) and industry best practices

 

 

Experience:

  • Leadership of large-scale data teams or programmes - £4m+
  • Previous experience of the Energy Industry, preferably B2B markets
  • Previous demonstrable experience in successfully dealing with senior stakeholders up to Board level
  • Experience in managing challenging and complex client & supplier engagements
  • Experience in dealing with complex negotiations with suppliers
  • Proven leadership of data functions
  • Resource planning for large scale projects / programmes 
  • Proven ability to lead and manage cross functional teams

 

 

Knowledge and skills:

  • Exceptional communicator and experienced in managing multiple challenging stakeholders with an ability to shape and influence decisions at executive level.

The UK Originator will be assigned a set of personal objectives including quantitative business development ones, defined and monitored at Business Platform level, and commercial qualitative objectives set and evaluated by the Commercial EC.

 

Key Objectives

  • To develop GEMS UK trading activities by originating high value power, gas, and environmental attributes transactions in the UK market
  •  To expand GEMS UK origination franchise through deal making activities on upstream and downstream renewable PPAs, structured gas and power transactions, and flexible assets including utility scale batteries (BESS)
  •  To contribute to the maximization of the value of the asset portfolio of GEMS UK, including renewables, transport, storage, and contract flexibility
  •  To generate commercial margins and provide a significant contribution to the profitability targets of the business unit
  •  To develop and secure incremental revenue streams from client origination transactions
  •  To find new value opportunities on gas and power assets in changing energy markets
  •  To increase Engie Group expertise and recognition in Energy Management and the Energy Transition area

 

Responsibilities

  •  Entertain commercial relationship with a portfolio of counterparts with the goal to increase the occurrence of deal making and the profitability of credit lines
  •  Contribute to the expansion of the gas and power structured transaction business on top of GEM UK existing portfolio and capabilities
  •  Work with traders and originators in the team in order to develop, innovate, and define new gas and power products and services in line with customer’s needs, exploring and leveraging new areas of value
  •  Actively contribute to define the growth strategy around renewables, asset management and trading portfolio flexibility products including utility-scale batteries (BESS)

Key Requirements

 

  •  Solid experience  in a senior portfolio management activity and/or senior structured origination function in the European gas and/or power business

  •  Specific knowledge of UK gas and power markets, and environmental attributes
  •  Well connected with various gas and power counterparts (industrials, utilities, banks, trading houses, etc)

What You Can Expect

As a Real Time Optimization I, you will support the delivery of financial results of the region versus budget within the values and ethics of the company. What You Can Expect

As a Retail Power Portfolio Senior Advisor  in Houston, you will be directly accountable to deliver expected gross margin originated from retail contract sales, focusing on PJM and MISO deregulated power regions. You will own all aspects of Profit & Loss (P&L) related to your retail power book, including detailed explanation of delivery month actuals, Power Purchase Agreements (PPA’s), forward book Market to Market (MTM) changes, and budget planning. You will be responsible for identifying risks, recommending hedge strategies, and taking direct action to hedge and manage all price and volume risk exposures inherit in retail power business. In collaboration with other key members of the Portfolio Management Team, you will share responsibility in formulating forward price curves for all Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) components of full- requirements products and continuous calibration of costing assumptions to ensure ENGIE remains competitive in retail space and share accountability to meet Sales goals.  You will also interact with other internal teams to meet Engie Resources’ objectives, including Sales, Business Development, Origination, Trading, Operations, Risk Management, Marketing, and Digital teams.

 

  • Trade financial and physical instruments for Energy, Capacity, Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), Ancillaries, Firm Transmission Rights (FTRs), Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), Power Options, and Weather derivatives in support of retail business
  • Validate load forecasts and oversee day-ahead demand bid schedules
  • Produce and reconcile daily Net Open Position (NOP) and MTM reports
  • Aggregate revenue and cost data to measure portfolio profitability
  • Contribute to daily formulation and regular calibration of forward price curves for Energy, Capacity, Ancillary Services, Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS), Network Integration Transmission Service (NITS), and all other cost components of full-requirements electricity products
  • Manage the price and volume risks associated with serving retail power load with various contractual obligations, i.e. fixed price, index, or hybrid 
  • Research complex business problems and identify opportunities to design, develop, and propose actionable solutions in support of pricing, portfolio management, and margin analysis activities
  • Coordinate with various functional groups to review and validate customer revenue and ISO settlement data to gain insights into portfolio profitability
  • Provide insight into the drivers of portfolio Profit & Loss from budget development through final settlement
  • Follow and comply with industry specifications, standards, regulations, and laws
  • Research and produce ad-hoc analysis on market fundamentals, risk exposure, customer load characteristics, various cost components and regulatory issues to enhance competitiveness, optimize risk exposure, and optimize the profitability of the portfolio 
  • Prepare and present market fundamentals presentations to internal and external customers
  • Participate in conference calls in support of Sales efforts with end-user customers, brokers, and other partners

Context:

As Short Term Trader, you will play a pivotal role within the Short Term Trading desk, organized within the Short term Power as a Service.

The mission of Short Term Trading is to maximize  the revenues of  the ENGIE  power portfolio within the CWE region and maximize the value of intraday trading activities in the developing pan-European Intraday markets. As an intraday trader, your key responsibility is to multitask and be able to take decisions on a very short time frame based on a large dataset.

These activities are executed within a sub team of 9 people organized continuous 24/7 and taking up both Trading & optimization activities.

You will interact very closely with the Algorithmic trading development team.

 

Role:

In the role of Short Term Trader, you will be responsible for: 

  • Maximizing the CWE power portfolio revenues in intra-day, including renewable management, sales exposure and asset flexibility
  • Leveraging on our market expertise in order to maximize the value of our trading activities.
  • You will act as a single window to the intraday Market in order to cover the real time physical needs of our clients and re-optimize the asset portfolio against the intraday power market prices.
  • Develop strategies to maximize revenues and minimize the costs for our clients over the different time horizons of the short term chain
  • Develop cross-maturity models which can serve the portfolio of assets, intermittency, DSM and develop efficient strategies to capture trading opportunities on those different markets.
  • Delivering 3rd party services for external Customers.
  • Ensuring correct and timely delivered reporting of portfolio and market activities.
  • You work in a 24/7 shift system.

You will report on a regular basis to the Head of Short Term Trading.

 

Profile:

  • You have strong analytical and programming skills: Data analysis, ability to build models
  • You have knowledge of the fundamentals in the power markets
  • You have quant interest and strong desire to efficiently automatize processes
  • You combine both analytical and synthesis skills and you are process-oriented.
  • You demonstrate a pragmatic, economic and logical attitude combined with problem solving skills.
  • You are able to perform in stressful circumstances with tight deadlines.
  • You have an entrepreneurial spirit and show a good sense for opportunities.
  • You are willing to work in a rotating system.
  • You are a team player with excellent social skills and the ability to operate in a changing environment.

Education and professional background:

  • You have a university degree in engineering and/or economics, or equivalent by experience.
  • You have a strong interest in Power Trading, proven trading experience is a strong asset.
  • You have programming skills like but not limited to  Python, R or VBA
  • You are able to work in English, and knowledge of French, Dutch or German are considered as strong assets.
