Your responsibilities as Business Developer

 

You will be selling services in the following domains: Asset Management, Boilers and HRSG Inspection, Root Cause Analysis, Vibration Monitoring & Interventions, Desalination & RO, Condition Monitoring, Battery Storage.

 

Typical customers you will be targeting are TAQA, TRANSCO & Distribution companies, DEWA, Emirates Global Aluminium, ENGIE Plants (we have the network), Sembcorp, Marubeni, …

 

You be focusing on:

 

  • Customer Acquisition and Relationship Management: Acquire new customers in the utilities industry domain, grow business with current customers, and develop close relationships with target customers and stakeholders.
  • Product and Service Introduction: Introduce target products and services in the region and identify development needs to meet market requirements.
  • Sales and Marketing Contribution: Contribute to sales and marketing plans, identify business opportunities, and negotiate contracts.
  • Presentation and Coordination: Prepare and lead presentations, and coordinate internal and external technical, financial, or legal professionals in the commercial process.

Your profile as Business Developer

  • An engineering degree in technical/scientific fields with over 10 years of experience in the electrical power/energy industry, including roles as operations or maintenance engineer and plant manager.

What You Can Expect

As the Project Development Manager, you will be responsible for the development of utility scale battery storage projects across the market. In this role you will support the development of existing pipeline, new greenfield development, and project acquisition. Additionally, you will communicate complex development situations, and work through development issues from the start of development through construction. Travel as necessary for siting, development and commercial activities as required to keep development on track.

 

Every day in this role you will be responsible for managing and supporting permitting, site control, interconnection matters, power marketing, design/ Engineering, Procurement, Construction “EPC”, financing and other matters critical to the development of energy storage projects throughout CAISO.

 

  • Manage/analyze information flow relevant to project development from internal subject matter experts and external consultants/vendors
  • Ownership of project inputs/assumptions and coordinating updates with respective internal groups
  • Manage project level progress, risks, opportunities, and economics while providing thoughtful analysis and risk evaluation
  • Drive decisions and prioritize allocation of resources based on a deep understanding of schedule dependencies and financial impacts
  • Maintain a understanding of the overall state of the energy storage market in CAISO, including regulatory and competitive matters, to inform development decisions
  • Track project progress through key development milestones, managing schedules and budgets, and coordinating across disciplines within the Company
  • Manage and/or support due diligence activities for acquisitions
  • Manage negotiation of lease/purchase options and agreements for site control
  • Coordinate engineering activities in pursuit of permits and as required for interconnection matters
  • Work closely with engineering team in support of design and EPC process

 

 

What You’ll Bring

  • A minimum of a bachelor degree in Business, Construction, Finance, Economics, Engineering, Environmental, Science, Management, or another analytical field 
  • A minimum of seven (7) years’ of work experience of which a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in CAISO or other Independent System Operator “ISO” with energy storage or renewable energy development
  • Demonstrated success and experience developing utility scale energy storage and/or renewable energy projects, within CAISO or other ISO
  • Familiarity with relevant state, county and city codes, procedures and regulations required by local planning and building departments
  • Experience preparing, negotiating, and closing commercial agreements including development agreements, site control agreements, consulting and service agreements, interconnection, and power sales agreements
  • Understanding of the CAISO market or other ISO with particular focus on interconnection, regulatory and offtake matters
  • Ability to evaluate development status and efficiently inform critical decision making with management

 

Additional Details

  • Must be available to travel domestically up to 30% of the time with the need for some overnight trips
  • Must be willing and able to comply with all ENGIE ethics and safety policies

  

Compensation

Salary Range: $134,400.00 – $207,000 USD, annually

 

This represents the average expected pay range for a qualified candidate.

 

ENGIE complies with all federal, state, and local minimum wage laws. Actual salary offered may vary depending on geography, experience, education, internal pay alignment, or other bona fide factors.

 

In addition to base pay, this position is eligible for a competitive bonus / incentive plan.

Job Purpose/Mission

ENGIE Energy Access Mozambique is seeking a Technical Manager to lead the technical deployment of solar business systems. This role involves business development and managing the technical implementation of energy solutions while working with a team of installation and maintenance technicians, ensuring successful deployment and maintenance of systems in compliance with health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards. The scope of work includes system sizing, system commissioning, troubleshooting and evaluating future technologies.

 

Responsibilities

Technical

  • Lead and manage design and electrical engineering for solar projects throughout the lead creation and execution stages

  • Configure PV systems based on site conditions and customers’ needs and expectations.

  • Manage electrical works such as installation and maintenance of solar energy systems.

  • Schedule, Coordinate and Inspect electrical installations and maintenance activities.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues to ensure the optimal performance of solar energy systems.

  • Train and support installation and maintenance technicians, promoting best practices, quality assurance checks and continuous improvement.

Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE):

  • Ensure all installation and maintenance activities comply with HSE regulations and company policies.

  • Conduct regular safety audits and risk assessments to identify and mitigate potential hazards

  • Promote a culture of safety within the team, ensuring all team members are aware of and adhere to HSE protocols.

  • Develop and implement HSE training programs for the team.

Team Management

Sales Strategy:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, or a related field.

  • Experiences in sales/business development is an added advantage

  • Registered & Certified with the DNE (Direcao Nacional de Energia) (mandatory)

  • Minimum 3 (Three) years of experience working in the Energy Sector specifically High Voltage electrical & Solar installations and maintenance.

  • Proven experience in sales and technical management, preferably in the renewable energy sector.

  • Basic knowledge of the PAYGO technology

  • Basic understanding of Health & Safety Requirements while dealing with High Voltage installations

  • Strong leadership and team management skills.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to develop and implement effective sales strategies.

  • Technical knowledge of solar energy systems and installation processes.

  • Languages: Portuguese (fluent) and English (fluent)

What You’ll Bring

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in which you have learned skills to be customer centric

JOB PURPOSE

  • Development of utility scale Solar and On shore wind  projects in compliance with investment criteria and Business development procedures.
  • These opportunities will primarily be focused on corporate PPA and REIPPP for renewable projects in South Africa, arising through Greenfield development, acquisitions or strategic partnerships.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  

KEY RESULT AREAS

              Pre-development phase

  • Identify predevelopment opportunities and enable an early position for the group.
  • Produce, present and get approval of  Origination memo and Development memo by the AMEA RES Commitment Committee
  • Present and get approval of the Development memo by the RGBU Development Committee
  • Identify and propose partnerships.

 

               Development phase

  • Plan development and allocate internal & external resources.
  • Negotiate and manage partnerships.
  • Execute operational development activities like configuration analysis , Key vendor selection , EPC contractor selection.
  • Good understanding of tariff optimization techniques including yield optimization , capital cost opitmisation and cost of capital optimization
  • Build up project documentation (Origination memo, Development memo Investment memo )
  • Perform Risk analysis.
  • Perform internal project review together with support functions.
  • Present Investment memo to AMEA RES CC and RGBU CC for  approval.
  • Lead a multi-functional team leading to successful submission of  a proposal to the Client

 

               Final development phase

 

  • Sign off before commitment.
  • Lead Final development activities leading to execution of project agreements .
  • Lead the project team for financial Closing.
  • Produce compliance memo
  • Hand over  to Construction/Integration.
  • Organize and have BD meetings to perform project reviews.
  • Ensure timely and adequate reporting.
  • Organize and follow up ad-hoc audits.

 

 

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

  • Be accountable for development of renewable opportunities from conceptualization to Financial close
  • Carry out proactive prospection and screen/evaluate opportunities.
  • Lead development activities with the support of a multifunctional team up to Financial close 
  • Negotiate to close a successful proposal submission in compliance with the investment criteria and risk mandate.
  • Contribute to define regional BD procedures, methods and documentation.
  • Support PAMT development plan (both CAPEX and development budget) and AMEA Renewables Business plan

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Degree

  • University Degree in Engineering, Finance or Economics;
  •  International MBA is a plus.

Experience

  • Minimum 6 years’ relevant working experience in the Energy sector;
  • More than 3 years of BD experience;
  • Experience in South Africa’s Private PPA programmes;
  • Good understanding of the typical bid requirements for the renewable energy industry;
  • Preference in experience in bringing projects to financial close with a specific focus on PPA negotiations and project finance exposure.

Language

  • Fluent in English, knowledge of other language(s) is a plus;

Specific Knowledge / skills

  • Detailed knowledge of energy markets in South Africa;
  • Renewable Power technologies including Solar , wind and Batteries;
  • Contract negotiation skills (EPC, PPA, SHA, Financing, …);
  • Knowledge of project finance mechanics and risk allocation.

Location / travel

  • Place of residence: Johannesburg, South Africa;
  • Frequent travel in South Africa and some travels internationally for Group seminars and meetings.
