Position Summary

The Shift Chemist will be responsible for monitoring the operating parameters necessary to achieve the optimum chemical conditions, both for current operations and to maintain the integrity of the power and water plant processes over the longer term. The principal chemist should have a detailed understanding of the chemical and environmental matters associated with the operations of Combined Cycle Plant, Desalinations Plant and a wide range of Auxiliary Equipment

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Performance Indicators

Safety, Quality & Environment:

  • Responsible to ensure compliance of IMS.
  • Perform all operational activities in line with Safety and Environment Management System.
  • Report unsafe conditions and behaviors.

 

Internal Safety System audits
Near miss and incident reporting

 

Plant Operations

  • Perform periodic sampling/calibration of lab instruments and checks of plant process water, sea water inlet and return (outfall) water and maintains a record of result.
  • Carry out routine Lab analysis of the plant process steam water cycle, Demin water, distillate, potable water and other random samples.
  • Knowledge on Co2 plant and Electro chlorination Plant
  • Monitor analytical results and take corrective and preventive actions.
  • Support and organize procedure for specialized acid cleaning, demister cleaning and degassifier cleaning etc.
  • Investigate and provide advice to operations about plant chemistry related issues and shutdown inspections along with report preparation (MED, Boilers, Condenser etc.)
  • Perform Lab analysis techniques, provide reports and recommend necessary remedial measures on material compatibility related issues to operations and maintenance teams.
  • Coordinates with external Labs for analysis results.
  • Responsible for maintaining material safety data sheets for all the chemicals used in Plant.
  • Responsible for managing and maintaining the lab chemicals, inventory and bulk chemicals consumption monitoring on routine basis
  • Boiler chemical cleaning and preservation.

Raising Work Orders Regarding Defects and Abnormal Conditions:

  • Arranging and safe storage of all chemicals used on the plant and ensure chemical top ups/unloading of tankers without any incident

Ensure the Portable Water Quality:

  • To ensure the export quality of potable water to comply with predefined Regulations.
  • Completion of shift reports to record and maintain consistent quality of potable water.

 

 

Vendor Relations:

  • Develop and maintain professional working relationships with local service providers.

 

To have the required services from vendors at the time of need.

Policies & Procedures:

  • Compliance to relevant operational procedures and instructions to ensure work is carried out in a controlled and consistent manner.

Core Competencies

Technical:

  • Good chemistry or chemical engineering foundation and practical knowledge of how it applies to modern power plant and desalination plant technologies.
  • Specific knowledge of: Cooling water chemistry, GT Evaporative Coolers, Closed Cooling Water system, HRSG, Multi Effect Desalination (MED), Distillate/Potable Water quality, DM plant Operation & Regeneration and related monitoring/dosing control
  • Ensuring compliance to legal obligations for monitoring and controlling potable water, ground water quality, stack emissions and effluents.
  • Update routine standard operating procedures/ COSHH assessment/ Risk Assessment
  • Provide training/Toolbox Talk related to bulk chemicals to Chemical Helpers

  • Performs routine chemical analysis, compare these with standards, prepares reports and performs or advises on chemical dosing.
  • Liaises closely with the operational team during any plant start-up, taking frequent water samples, performing the necessary chemical dosing and advising the shift staff regarding chemical process control across the range of plant.

Internal:

  • Daily communication of plant maintenance issues and defects with the Maintenance Team and other teams.

Mirfa 2 RO Plant:
Mirfa 2 Reverse Osmosis (M2 RO) Plant uses RO technology to produce and supply up to 120 million imperial gallons, equivalent to 550,000 cubic metres of potable water per day to EWEC under a 30-year O&M Agreement with Mirfa 2 RO Desalination Company. The M2 RO Water Plant is located adjacent to the existing Mirfa 1 Plant located at the Mirfa Complex five kilometers west of the town of Mirfa, about 100 kilometers southwest of the city of Abu Dhabi on the Arabian Gulf coast in UAE. The expected date for starting commercial operations of the plant is November 2025.

2. JOB PURPOSE:
Field Operator is responsible for safe operation, local monitoring, control and emergency handling of the RO plant equipment during shift operations in accordance with established procedures and dispatch requirements.

3. SCOPE OF THE JOB:
Responsibilities include setting up department policies, reviewing O&M manuals, participating in plant commissioning, and ensuring smooth transition from EPC to O&M Team. These responsibilities represent the minimum expectations for the role; additional duties may be assigned as needed.

About MIRFA 2 RO Plant 

Mirfa 2 Reverse Osmosis (M2 RO) Plant, uses RO technology to produce and supply up to 120 million imperial gallons, equivalent to 550,000 cubic metres of potable water per day to EWEC under a 30-year O&M Agreement with Mirfa 2 RO Desalination Company. 

The M2 RO Water Plant is located adjacent to the existing Mirfa 1 Plant located at the Mirfa Complex five kilometers west of the town of Mirfa, about 100 kilometers southwest of the city of Abu Dhabi on the Arabian Gulf coast in UAE. 

The expected date for starting commercial operations of the plant is November 2025. 

 

Job Purpose 

Operate the water plant from the control room to ensure the plant meets availability, reliability, efficiency, and generation targets within environmental limits. 

Key Responsibilities 

Mobilization Phase: 

  • Setup of department policies & procedures. 

  • Review O&M manual, process/design issues. 

  • Participate in plant commissioning activities. 

O&M Period: 

  • Decision-making affecting plant processes and performance. 

  • Develop and implement operational procedures & protocols. 

  • Ensure adherence to safety regulations and commercial agreements. 

  • Provide technical and managerial support to the operations team. 

Key Accountabilities 

Health, Safety, Environmental & Quality Management: 

  • Ensure adherence to safety, quality, and environmental management procedures. 

  • Perform Safety Controller/Issuer/Designated responsibilities. 

  • Promote safe working methods and operational practices. 

Governance: 

  • Ensure compliance with laws, directives, and project requirements. 

  • Adhere to corporate policies and procedures. 

Human Resources: 

  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in specialized plant areas. 

  • Support the development of Emirati talent. 

  • Lead performance management and staff development. 

Plant Operations: 

  • Dispatch potable water per Water Control Centre (WCC) instructions. 

  • Operate, monitor, and manage emergency responses via DCS in the Central Control Room. 

  • Perform field duties in the absence of a Field Operator. 

  • Execute RO rack start-ups and shutdowns following SOPs. 

  • Coordinate with the Shift Charge Engineer on Work Permit isolations. 

  • Prepare and maintain operational data reports. 

  • Monitor key parameters using normalization software. 

  • Conduct predictive troubleshooting and diagnose plant faults. 

  • Complete shift and data reports in compliance with WPA, O&M Agreement, and company protocols. 

  • Monitor chemical levels and manage the safe unloading of bulk chemicals. 

  • Support incident reporting, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation. 

  • Ensure effective shift handovers and coordinate maintenance activities. 

Qualifications and Skills 

Knowledge: 

  • English proficiency, with Arabic as an advantage. 

  • Understanding of Health, Safety, and Environment Management procedures. 

  • Practical understanding of water treatment, desalination, and auxiliary plant operations. 

  • Knowledge of commercial agreements and local environmental legislation. 

Experience: 

  • At least five years in a similar role in a RO Desalination Water Plant. 

  • Commissioning and start-up experience is advantageous. 

Qualifications: 

  • Engineering-related diploma/degree or equivalent. 

  • Professional training on a water plant is preferred.

  • Various work levels from low to high risk. 

  • Medical exams required before taking the position.

Mirfa 2 Staff are expected to reside within the Mirfa city premises to ensure timely response to plant emergencies and callouts. Exceptions to reside in Abu Dhabi / Ruwais / Zayed City, may be considered by plant management.

  • Contribute to budget planning. 

  • Support the development of operational budgets. 

  • Evaluate supporting contracts and monitor contractor performance. 

Qualifications and Skills
