Internship Engineer (M/F) - Iron fuel for industry decarbonization

LAB INDUSTRIE DU FUTUR – ENGIE LAB CRIGE
Centre de Recherche et Innovation Gaz et Energies Nouvelles
Intitulé du stage : Stagiaire Ingénieur.e (H/F)
 Iron fuel for industry decarbonization: Value chain tool

WE ARE TRANSITION MAKERS

ENGIE is a global energy player committed to “Net Zero Carbon” in 2045. Lab Crigen is the corporate R&D center having the mission to support the business providing cutting edge expertise. One of the core activities of the ENGIE-group is the “utility-as-a-service” (production of energy in decentralized assets for industrial clients). To achieve carbon neutrality, ENGIE considers a wide range of low-carbon solutions. In the near future, one of those could be Metal Fuels (MFs) [1].

MFs are a new and efficient energy carrier produced via green hydrogen (H2). By using an innovative burner/boiler concept, MFs allow to produce medium/high temperature steam for industrial usages and therefore is of interest for ENGIE group. Within the panorama of MFs, Iron due to its properties (energy density, safety, combustion properties and cost) is considered the most advanced one [2]. The figure below shows the typical Iron Fuel Reduction/Combustion cycle starting from green H2.

A diagram of a mixture of iron powders and powdersDescription automatically generated

In the literature, first assessments of the iron value chain have been made for electricity production and retrofit of power plant [4].

The objective of this internship is to develop a techno-economic tool to evaluate the “power-to-iron” value chain (energy efficiency and CO2 emissions) going from green H2 sourcing to its usage in industrial boilers. Several hypotheses can be made on hydrogen sourcing (e.g. local, regional or long distance). Techno-economic considerations must be included in the study.

The engineering toolbox must be able to make:

a techno-economic analysis of the iron fuel value chain (energy, CO2, techno-economics) for industrial steam production ;

comparisons with alternative energy vectors (H2, NH3) ;

a deep dive into a decentralized solution based on iron fuel (PV plant + electrolysis + iron fuel storage + iron boiler) ;

several hypotheses on the production, transport, storage and utilization of iron for industrial steam generation.
