Project Manager BESS

To address the need of power system flexibility with a high percentage of renewable energy sources, ENGIE is building Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in Belgium which include a 100 MW / 400 MWh project on its Kallo site. 

This project will be executed under a multi-package approach (civil works, BOP contractor, power transformers, battery containers, …) and subject to a favorable outcome of the CRM bidding process of September 2024.

Within the Project Management team of EMS, we are looking for a Project Manager to take this project from Final Investment Decision (Sept. 2024) to Commercial operation and hand-over to Operations & Maintenance (Q1-2027).

YOUR CHALLENGE as Project Manager BESS (M/F/X):

Drive the project execution of BESS Kallo in all its disciplines in accordance with the approved budget, timeline, scope, safety and environmental commitments in order to meet all the requirements and with the required quality, safety and governance policies applicable to the project.

As part of the Owner organization, in your role as Project Manager, you have overall responsibility, authority and accountability for the successful execution of the project.

• You manage the overall project time schedule and budget;
• You identify, follow-up and mitigate the project risks;
• You manage the contractual aspects with the support of the Contract Manager;
• You lead the project team (Engie-EMS, Entity, Laborelec, Owner’s Engineer) and monitor the overall activities;

• You organize and lead the coordination meetings with the contractors to handle progress, track open points and manage all outstanding issues;
• You ensure that Health and Safety standards are upheld and considered the absolute priority by all parties involved;
• You ensure quality standards and acceptance criteria are implemented and followed before, during and after each construction activity according to an Inspection and Test Plan (ITP);

• You report regularly to the steering committee and internal stakeholders (on the progress, risks, financial status, HSE aspects) following the ENGIE governance rules for large industrial projects;
• You proactively anticipate the issues arising during the project execution and take the responsibility of making timely decisions about their resolution (including when to trigger ad-hoc steering committees or escalate the topic within the Owner organization).
• You ensure the proper transfer of the project to the Operations & Maintenance team of the plant.
• You lead the consolidation of the return of experience at the conclusion of the project.

You will work in a team of project managers which includes peers working on similar projects (such as BESS Vilvoorde and BESS Maxima), sharing experience and best practices.

YOUR PROFILE as Project Manager BESS (M/F/X):

• Master’s degree in Engineering (Electromechanical, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil or similar) or equivalent by experience.
• Professional experience in industrial project management, construction management, contract management, preferably over multi-package projects involving management of interfaces and schedule coordination, in power generation or similar industry
• You are able to analyze complex situations, identify root causes, and propose practical solutions. You think critically and make informed decisions.
• You will be the face of the project in all its aspects towards internal and external stakeholders. You are adaptable, you have a clear vision of the project objectives, and you demonstrate leadership. You foster a positive team culture.
• You set high standards for yourself and your team. You are reliable, dependable, autonomous. You prioritize issues in the best interest of the project.
• You excel in communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management. Your influencing skills enable you to navigate organizational dynamics and assert your perspective.
• You have a technical knowledge of power projects which will allow you to rapidly identify potential issues on site, to investigate and address them together with the Contractors and the Owner’s Engineer.
• You are fluent in English. A good knowledge of Dutch is a plus.
• Knowledge of scheduling tools (MS Project, Primavera P6, …) is a plus.

Work location: Working from Linkebeek (EMS head office), Brussels (ETB), Kallo/Singelberg (Engie entity head office), and remotely, during the preparation phase, with visits to the main contractors offices.  Mobilized to Kallo site, on average 80% of the time and depending on your project team site assignments, during the construction and commissioning phase (approx. 18 months).
