What You Can Expect
As the Protection and Controls Lead based in Houston, TX, you will oversee and support the operation, testing, and maintenance of substation protection and control systems across our portfolio of battery storage projects. In this critical role, you will be responsible for creating and executing comprehensive relay test plans, troubleshooting complex electrical control systems, and ensuring all activities comply with industry standards such as International Electrical Testing Association (NETA), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) PRC-005C. Your expertise will facilitate optimal system performance through effective collaboration with internal teams and external contractors, ensuring our energy projects maintain peak operational reliability and safety.
Reporting to the High Voltage Program Manager, your primary responsibilities encompass:
- Develop and implement detailed relay test plans using advanced test equipment, such as Doble, Omicron, Manta, or Megger relay test sets
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues in protection and control systems, focusing on protection zones and analyzing trip event files to identify root causes
- Commission and maintain the performance of substation protection and control systems in compliance with industry standards and protocols
- Coordinate with project teams and contractors to support commissioning, maintenance, and system upgrades
- Maintain detailed records of all testing, troubleshooting, and system configurations to ensure regulatory compliance and support future operational improvements, including updating CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems)
- Demonstrate familiarity with NERC regulations across different regions in the United States, including compliance with PRC-005C, freeze protection measures, and security protocols
- Support additional responsibilities of a Protection and Controls Specialist, including monitoring system reliability, assisting with system upgrades, and ensuring physical and cyber security compliance for protection systems
What You’ll Bring
- Minimum high school diploma or technical certificate
- Minimum of five (5) years in substation protection and control systems, relay testing, and electrical system troubleshooting
- Experience with renewable energy systems, including the integration and operation of renewable assets
- Proficiency in Substation Control Systems: Skilled in managing substation controls and communication networks, with experience in SCADA system integration, commissioning, and complex schematic troubleshooting
- Comprehensive Equipment Commissioning Experience: Extensive background in configuring, testing, and maintaining protection and control systems, including SEL relays and SCADA interactions, complemented by detailed knowledge of metering system installation and calibration
- Robust Safety Practices: Expert knowledge of LOTO procedures, arc flash protection, NFPA 70E compliance, and high-voltage safety protocols ensuring rigorous adherence to safety standards
- Effective Communication and Collaboration: Strong reporting and coordination capabilities, ensuring clear communication with stakeholders and seamless collaboration with engineers and project teams to enhance system performance and regulatory compliance
- Exceptional Problem-Solving Skills: Demonstrated ability to diagnose and resolve complex issues in equipment and system operations, supported by thorough documentation and detailed analysis
Additional Details
- This role is eligible for our hybrid work policy with a minimum of three (3) days working in office. For candidates residing in remote cities in Texas, occasional travel to our Houston, TX office location is required, with a minimum of 1 week per month
- Must be available to travel domestically up to 75% of the time and with the need for some overnight trips
- Must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license/clean driving record
- Must be willing and able to comply with all ENGIE ethics and safety policies
Compensation
Salary Range: $41.39 - $63.47 USD hourly
This represents the average expected pay range for a qualified candidate.
Actual offered salary may depend on geography, experience, industry knowledge, education, internal pay alignment, or other bona fide factors.

In addition to base pay, this position is eligible for a competitive bonus / incentive plan.
