What You Can Expect
Our Electrical Engineer III, will be located at the University of Iowa Campus in Iowa City, IA. You will be will be involved in the Electrical Engineering design, construction, operations and troubleshooting activities for utility power, chilled water, steam, and water production and associated distribution systems at ENGIE at The University of Iowa. Your primary focus will be on becoming a subject matter expert in electrical systems at this site, with occasional support extended to other locations. You'll collaborate closely with internal departments, customers, and external partners throughout the utility projects' lifecycle, from development and construction to ongoing operations. you'll provide occasional consultancy services, aiding in troubleshooting and operations beyond the utility meter.
You'll be responsible for maintaining the campus-wide electrical model for both ENGIE and The University, with a keen focus on ensuring accuracy and efficiency. Your duties will extend to conducting arc flash modeling and relay coordination across all voltage levels, spanning ENGIE and The University of Iowa's Main and Oakdale campuses. You will play a crucial role in troubleshooting electrical distribution issues for ENGIE and the University, addressing concerns on both sides of the building meter to ensure seamless operations.
Your involvement will also encompass participating in switching plans and curtailments, working closely with our Regional Electrical Provider to ensure compliance and optimize efficiency. You'll be tasked with performing peak load calculations to enhance system performance and reliability. You'll be responsible for drafting comprehensive event summaries to document key activities and outcomes, facilitating clear communication and accountability across all stakeholders.
What You’ll Bring
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or another engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited university
- Either a PE License or a willingness to obtain one, showcasing your commitment to professional development and adherence to industry standards
- A minimum of five (5) years of experience where you have demonstrated a solid understanding of electrical design, power generation, distribution, and/or utility systems while gaining experience developing standards, specifications, and documentation
- Familiarity with the National Electric Code and NFPA 70E, essential for ensuring compliance and safety in electrical systems
- Proficiency in electrical design, calculation, and analysis tools such as AutoCAD and SKM or their competitors
- A strong understanding of arc flash, short circuit, load flow, and protective systems design and operation, critical for maintaining system reliability and safety
- You have participated in the development of technical specifications, procurement, installation and operations for power plant, medium voltage distribution, substations, and associated protective relaying and control systems
- Experienced in coordinating with external electric utilities on transmission interconnection design and operations and incident investigations and event summarization
- Experience in assisting contracted third-party design firms of utility systems, demonstrating your ability to collaborate effectively with external partners
- You are a skilled troubleshooter of utility and customer electrical systems
Up-to-date knowledge of new technologies and regulatory conditions, including utility requirements, vendor qualifications, industry best practices, safety standards, and relevant standards development
- Proficient in verbal, written and electronic communications using tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint to create emails presentations and other professional communicate to Internal customers, vendors and other stakeholders
- Experienced in building relationships and collaborating with project development, design, construction and operations teams facilitating smooth project execution and operation
Additional Details
- Must be available to travel domestically up to 5% of the time with the need for some overnight trips
- Must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license/clean driving record operation of company vehicles is required
- Must be willing and able to comply with all ENGIE ethics and safety policies
- This position consist of 20% of outdoor work, while performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions
- Ability to handle multiple assignments or projects on a timely basis with a high degree of accuracy
- Ability to climb ladders, and occasionally work in environments with varying temperatures, noise levels and weather conditions
Compensation
Salary Range: $84,000 – $128,800 USD annually
This represents the average expected pay range for a qualified candidate.
Actual offered salary may depend on geography, experience, industry knowledge, education, internal pay alignment, or other bona fide factors.

In addition to base pay, this position is eligible for a competitive bonus / incentive plan.
